Subjects and Objects
Definition - The subject is the person or thing that is or does what the verb says. Different kinds of words can be the subject of a sentence (nouns, pronouns, etc.) A subject can also consist of more than one word.
Examples:
• Dieses Land ist Österreich. [This country is Austria.]
• Morgen werden wir nach Hamburg fliegen. [Tomorrow we will fly to Hamburg.]
Objects are people or things on the receiving end of the action expressed by the verb, either directly (direct object) or indirectly (indirect object).
Examples of direct object:
• Ich höre die Musik. [I hear the music.]
• Ingrid macht eine Schokoladentorte. [Ingrid makes a chocolate cake.]
Examples of indirect object:
• Der Briefträger bringt dir die Post. [The postman brings the mail to you.]
• Die Blumen sind für Frau Zimmermann. [The flowers are for Mrs Zimmermann.]
